St. Vincent de Paul's Communications Audit

Building clarity around a mission that already changes lives.

St. Vincent de Paul Dayton has spent decades serving neighbors experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Every day, staff members, volunteers, Vincentians, donors, and community partners help thousands of people find shelter, food, stability, and hope.

The work wasn't the challenge. Telling the story of that work was.

As a new Executive Director stepped into leadership, she recognized something many organizations eventually face: communication had grown organically over time. The website said one thing. Facebook emphasized another. Instagram, LinkedIn, donor emails, and CityThrift each highlighted different parts of the organization.

All those things were good, but they were disconnected.

The Opportunity

St. Vincent de Paul didn't come to us looking for a new logo or a redesigned website. They wanted something more valuable. They wanted an outside perspective.

What story were people actually reading when they encountered the organization online?

Did donors understand the full impact of their gifts?

Did shoppers realize their purchases supported homelessness prevention?

Did volunteers see how they fit into the larger mission?

Most importantly, if someone discovered St. Vincent de Paul for the first time, would they understand who the organization is, why it matters, and how to become part of the mission?

Those are bigger questions than a digital marketing audit. They're communication strategy questions.

The Challenge

Like many nonprofits, St. Vincent de Paul wasn't short on content.

There were newsletters.

Social posts.

Volunteer stories.

Annual reports.

Donor emails.

Community updates.

How could we make all of those communications reinforce the same story?

As we reviewed more than 100 pieces of content across five communication channels, a pattern emerged. Each platform was telling a meaningful story. Just not the same one.

Facebook focused on immediate needs.

Instagram celebrated volunteers and events.

LinkedIn reinforced credibility.

The donor journey thanked supporters for their generosity.

CityThrift promoted affordable shopping.

Each message worked on its own.

Together, they left audiences connecting the dots for themselves.

Our Approach

We conducted a comprehensive Communications Audit across the organization's digital ecosystem.

That included reviewing:

  • the website

  • Facebook

  • Instagram

  • LinkedIn

  • the donor nurture email sequence

  • analytics and reporting infrastructure

In addition to evaluating platforms, we evaluated the experience. We looked at how each audience encountered St. Vincent de Paul, from first impressions to long-term engagement, and asked this question:

Is every communication helping people understand the mission more clearly?

We identified opportunities to strengthen analytics, improve campaign tracking through Google Analytics and UTM implementation, refine audience journeys, and build a messaging framework that connected every touchpoint. We organized everything into a practical roadmap with quick wins, longer-term priorities, implementation guides, staff training, and follow-up support.

The Result

The biggest insight was St. Vincent de Paul had ample communication. What it needed was more connection.

Leadership walked away with a clearer understanding of how each communication channel contributes to the organization's overall story, where audiences were getting lost, and how to create a more consistent experience moving forward.

The finished audit was not only an assessment, but also a blueprint for aligning messaging across the organization. It helped donors, volunteers, shoppers, partners, and community members see both individual moments of impact and the complete system of care behind them.

When every communication reinforces the same mission, people understand what an organization does, why it matters, and where they belong.

Great organizations rarely struggle because they lack stories to tell. More often, they're telling dozens of great stories that never quite come together.

That's where a communications audit can make all the difference.

If your nonprofit or mission-driven organization has grown over time and you're wondering whether your website, emails, social media, and marketing are working together, or just working alongside each other, we'd love to help you find out.
